The superb artist, Rachel Huggins, has just released her latest single, ‘Take Control.’ With a background in Gospel singing, Huggins fuses Soul, R&B, Disco, Funk, and Motown on this single. It is a beautiful union of genres that will have you reaching for the repeat button.
There is a big sound from the get-go with luscious harmonies filling the audio spectrum. The bass works with the vocals and creates a beautiful partnership. Synths rise from the track and add extra colour too. We loved the chorus, which is catchy and feels like an old friend coming back around.
Huggins says, “‘Take Control’ is a track that is both personal and political: about freedom and finding the strength to pursue a life that’s right for you, despite the pressure society may put on us to conform into something we aren’t.” She continues, “The track also tackles racial discrimination: the Windrush generation, the disproportionate incarceration of young black people and the institutionalised racism still present in government and education.” This is what we love about Huggins; she is using her significant platform to raise issues that need to have a light shone on them. She does not shy away from the tough subjects and highlights them in a relatable way.
Lyrically Huggins is simply wonderful. Lyrics such as, “I want to be released from the confines of my mind, of my government. I want my people to receive justice from the injustices of my people,” feature on the bridge of the song and are a prime example of her sharp, intelligent, and honest content.
‘Take Control’ is the first single to be released from Huggins’s eagerly anticipated upcoming EP ‘Keep Dreaming,’ which is due to be released soon. Make sure you check out this fantastic artist today!
