Hi Ed, tell us about yourself?

I’m Ed, I’m from Devon, and I write music as Isolated Corners.

What is your songwriting process?

For this upcoming EP, I was starting on something small, like just a chord progression or rhythm. From there, some ideas I can start to hear songs in, but other ideas just remain small unless I push them or shelve them. I like to try different writing methods and to set myself creative goals for songs to keep myself on my toes. For Odd One Out it was to have a tight and energetic rhythm and bass.

Tell us about your latest release?

My latest release is ‘Odd One Out’ which is a single pulled from my upcoming EP ‘Kinds of Motion’ coming out July 3rd. ‘Odd One Out’ lyrically is about battles with yourself, fighting against toxic traits that feel like they fully control you at times. The whole song came together very quickly and naturally.

What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?

I haven’t written lyrics yet that specifically address “a message” that someone can take away. Instead, I’ve mostly written lyrics about my own experiences in hopes that it resonates with someone and maybe makes them feel like they’re not alone. Looking at my music taste, those are the kinds of songs, are usually my favourites.

Who are your musical influences?

I’m mainly influenced by melancholic indie and alternative music like Radiohead and Grizzly Bear. Realistically though, the list of music that’s played a big part in my life is a lot longer.

Who are your non-musical influences?

I think animation and film have the next biggest influence on my music. Denis Villeneuve and David Firth are the first names that come to mind. Anything by them is enough to drive my creativity through the roof.

What’s the best gig that you have ever played?

Unfortunately, I have yet to play a live show as Isolated Corners, and I don’t think I will be any time soon until I can wrap my head around finding other musicians and time. It’s definitely something I’d like to do at some point. Whether it be just me, or full band.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

Unfortunately, because of recent events; live music seems to be in big trouble. Obviously, it’s never going to die, but I’m very worried about the local scenes. I wouldn’t be a musician if it weren’t for local bands and gigs.

What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting out?

I think the most important thing I’ve learnt when it comes to writing solo stuff is quality will always be the winner over quantity. I used to have the problem of definitely having enough songs but never taking the time to polish them. Something as simple as spending a couple more hours on writing a good hook could transform a song from something you’re going to skip when it comes on, to the song you’re most proud of.

What are your hopes for the next two years?

Just staying creative and releasing more music. It’s something I’m currently and always will be doing.
