Hi The Shelter, tell us about yourself?

We are a rock ’n roll duo from northern Mexico, Javier and Elías, as simple as that.

What is your songwriting process?

Usually Javier (bass and guitar player) comes out with a riff, and Elías (vocals) sings some melody on top of it. Then, together we decide the structure of the song. Elías writes the lyrics later on his own, to make them match the melody.

Tell us about your latest release?

Our latest release it’s a song called ‘Roads of México’, it is more like a stoner rock song. It talks about how ironical it is to have agoraphobia in the middle of the lockdown we all are living. It’s about someone who didn’t enjoy his freedom before the lockdown, ’cause he was scared of going out, and now he longs for the travelling through the roads of Mexico.

What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?

Honesty. We write whatever comes to our minds; we try to be as authentic as possible. We think lots of people can relate to our lyrics. We try to do lyrics as honest and as human as possible. Also, rock ’n roll is very needed nowadays.

Who are your musical influences?

We have a very wide range of influences, but, I guess it is very obvious when you listen to The Shelter that we love bands and artists like Black Sabbath, Queens of the Stone Age, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, etc.

Who are your non-musical influences?

Any king of Caribbean music What’s the best gig that you have ever played? We have never played live as The Shelter since we started right before the lockdown. But individually we have played in great venues like Bowery Electric (NYC) and Bar Oriente (Mexico City)

What is your funniest gig moment?

It is actually quite funny that our first gig as a band was scheduled the exact Saturday that lockdown started in Mexico. We had to cancel. Lol.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

Authenticity. Everyone tries so hard to be ‘different’ and ‘unique’, but they’ve forgotten about the basics.

What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting out?

Not to wait to much time to release a song/EP/album. Get your music out there!

What are your hopes for the next two years?

Gigs, gigs and gigs.
