Music Interview: Hendrix – ‘Twisted’ Out Now!

*Read Disclosure Here

We caught up with Murrieta-based musician Hendrix, following the release of the single ‘Twisted’, for a full interview.

Tell us about yourself?

I grew up in a musical family of 4, albeit I was least musically inclined. I always loved music and enjoyed whenever my father or mother would pick up an instrument. I wanted to do that. About 14 years old, my father taught me the basics of music theory and some basics on piano and guitar. By 16 years old, I was hooked.

What is your songwriting process?

I think my songwriting process differs from others. I create the music/progression first, and however, my mood is or however, the vibe of the song is typically the direction I take the song lyrically.

On one occasion, I had put this piece of music together and wanted it to have a certain vibe, but I couldn’t get there emotionally. I went and picked a fight/spat with the person I was in a relationship with at the time to find the emotion I needed to feel about writing the lyrics, and it worked! That song will follow this release, ‘Twisted’. STAY TUNED!

Tell us about your latest release?

‘Twisted’ was written during a unique time in my life. Of course, it’s about a failed relationship which seems to spurn a lot of songs out of me.

I think it works really well with the brilliant video episode provided Juan Cano of WTH Graphics. It’s the 6th episode of 8, and the song exemplifies where we’re at in the story.

What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?

I hope my music talks to people individually. That’s what I love about art in general. I see/hear art differently that everyone else. It becomes personal, and I hope my listeners have a personal experience with my music.

Who are your musical/non-musical influences?

My father would be the biggest musical and non-musical influence on my life. And since he’s passed, I find myself longing to share my experiences and how he inspired me to be where I am today.

What’s the best gig that you have ever played?

I always feel that every show is the best show. As long as there are people in the crowd and I’m playing music, it’s perfect.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

There are numerous obstacles for bands and artists, especially with how the industry is constantly changing. At the same time, it’s never been easier to get your music out to the masses and get paid doing it.

I find the trick, so far, is to stay nimble. Meaning, be flexible. You’re not always going to do what you want to do, so learn how to adapt. Find ways to get it out there.

What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting out?

What I said in the previous question. It might now happen for you in the beginning, but don’t let that stop you. I find ways to play, even if it’s on other people’s records, etc. Get out there. Learn the process and keep refining your craft.

What are your hopes for the next two years?

I have no idea where things will be going over the next two years, but that’s also the exciting part of life. I do know that I plan to keep writing, producing and releasing what I love to do!
