We caught up with musician Jake Morgan following the release of his latest album ‘From the Ground Up’ in August 2020.
What is your earliest music memory?
Probably making drum kits out of pots and pans on the floor using wooden spoons for sticks. Got some good sounds out of that!
Who or what got you into music?
I started playing instruments when I was a kid growing up in Handsworth, Birmingham, in the eighties. I got deeper into music when I was a teenager in Lichfield, and the family was going through a rough patch, that was when I started to write songs.
Who influenced your latest release?
Before I moved to Bristol, I lived in London and played in a jazz duo with Canadian singer Bahia Pierce called Radio Picture. Some tracks definitely take inspiration from the Billie Holiday songs we had in our repertoire.
The overall feel of the album is influenced by the reiki sessions I had started having in winter 2019. Realising how my low self-esteem affected my life changed everything for me, that’s why the album is called From The Ground Up, a new beginning.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Too many to mention but I think First Aid Kit are great.
What’s your dream venue to play?
The Royal Albert Hall or Brixton Academy be cool with that sloping floor.
Other than music, what are you passionate about?
Nature, coffee and lentils
How do you feel about how the internet plays a role in the music business today?
Actually, I was just thinking about how different it would be if this were a telephone interview. To hear a real voice with a personality, maybe you have an accent, maybe we’d go off on a tangent and talk about other things.
If you could choose one thing for fans to take away from your music, what would it be?
Just because things are the way things are, it doesn’t mean they have to be that way.
What is your favourite song to play live?
Right now off the new album probably ‘Born to Be Free’. In these uncertain times, it feels good to sing that refrain.
Have you started working on your next release?
Yeah, at my album launch show we did one of my new unreleased songs called ‘King of the Wasteland’ as an encore. Also, I had an idea to complete a permaculture design course and write songs about it for a project.
