Hailing from Birmingham, Glow Beets is a superb EDM Producer whose latest release ‘Do You Feel The Same Way I Do’?. Read our in-depth interview now!

What is your earliest music memory?

Singing ‘Karma Chameleon’ as a toddler. I loved that song when I was a little kid. I was obsessed with it! I could speak and sing when I was 18 months old, and that song was a bit hit at that time.

Who or what got you into music?

My first album was Bad by Michael Jackson, and it kicked open a door in my mind, and it made me want to write songs. My mum was a youth club leader so she’d be out in the evening time and I used to get my keyboard and my cassette recorder set up in the kitchen and close the door and play basic triads on my keyboard and sing over the top.

I filled about three cassettes by the age of 8 or 9. It was only years later that I discovered the true genial thinking behind that record. Nowadays, whenever I come across a production decision, I quietly ask myself “what would Quincy do here?”.

You have collaborated with Liberty Grant on the new single ‘Do You Feel The Same Way I Do?’, what brought about this collaboration?

So Glow Beets is a Label and brand, it’s not just about me as a Producer. The ethos of the brand is to introduce the world to new and emerging talent.

I like to work with up, and coming singer-songwriters with a professional and ambitious attitude and Liberty fits the mould perfectly. She is brave, sassy, courageous, talented and exciting. When she sings, she is believable.

What’s the message behind ‘Do You Feel The Same Way I Do?

Liberty wrote the lyrics so I can’t take credit for that, but the theme of the song is love-based. The chorus states “I’m putting my heart on the table / Are your feelings true and stable? / Do you feel the same way I do?”. Its the ultimate question of love when you think about it.

I feel this way, but do you feel the same? It’s simple, but the best messages in life are direct. It’s a courageous and bold question that not everyone has the guts to ask.

What’s your dream venue to play?

Wembley Stadium! Without a doubt. I’m a massive football fan, so Wembley is the holy grail. My wife is a session musician, and she has played there, so I take comfort in that!

Other than music, what are you passionate about?

Football for sure. I used to play at a decent standard, but music took over the reins in my life many years ago. When you’re truly dedicated to music, it’s hard to dedicate yourself to anything else with the same level of passion. I’m also passionate about Education.

I lecture part-time in Songwriting, Music Production and Music Business at BIMM Institute. I love working with the next generation of Songwriters, DJs, A&Rs, Event Organisers, Session Players and Artists.

What changes would you like to see in the music business?

It takes a huge effort to keep up with the changes we see all the time. It’s important to keep up though; otherwise, you run the risk of being left behind. This business used to be about selling records, and now it’s a data-driven algorithmic industry, and that’s fine. I’m not knocking it; it is what it is.

The mechanics of today’s industry is almost incomparable to the industry that I entered, but again that’s cool. I’m not here to judge. I’m here to play.

I started out by learning how to cut and splice tape, now I can do that same thing in seconds inside of Ableton Live, and I’m not complaining about that! I think today’s industry is more exciting than it used to be and I think that for a whole multitude of reasons.

How do you feel about how the internet plays a role in the music business today?

I love it! I’m not going to be one of these people that says “Things aren’t how they used to be blah blah blah”. Things are great now! The internet has changed everything forever. I can collaborate with people all over the world from the comfort of my studio or even my house.

You have worked with artists such as Shayne Ward, Euro-pop star Miss D (#1 in Portugal), Danish teen sensation Honik, US Soul starlet Jackie Paladino and UK electro-pop artist Hatty Keane, any great stories to share?

I remember when I worked with Jackie Paladino, I had arranged to meet her in Washington Square in NYC. We had arranged for our collaboration to take place in a writing room at NYU, where she was studying at that time. She turned up 15 minutes late with tears in her eyes. I didn’t know what to say as I hadn’t met her before.

I asked her what was wrong and she told me that she’d just bumped into her Ex in a nearby cafe whilst getting a coffee before our session. She started emoting all these insightful and philosophical feelings about love and what it is. As a Songwriter, emotion and narrative is everything, and I was thinking to myself “quick get her thoughts and words down and get her to pour her heart out, and something cool can come from this!!!”.

We couldn’t get the writing room we’d arranged to get so we just sat on one of the stairwells in the university with loads of natural reverb bellowing around us as we sat and worked with Jackie’s insanely powerful jazzy blues Amy Winehouse type vocal was gushing out such emotion and amazing melodies. That afternoon, we co-wrote the song ‘Can You Tell Me What Love Is?’ which has since been released twice in the US with two different versions.

Have you started working on your next release?

Yes, it’s done and ready! ‘Do You Feel The Same Way I Do?’ (Glow Beets X Liberty Grant) will be out on September 25th 2020 and ‘4am’ (Glow Beets X Felix) will be out on October 30th 2020.

The next release after that will be my final one of the year which will be out on November 27th, and it will be with Molly Morgan who is making some big waves in the EDM world right now.
