What is your earliest music memory?
I remember hearing my sister practising saxophone constantly when we were growing up.
Who or what got you into music?
I owe my initial interest in music to my sister and dad. I grew up hearing my sister practising saxophone obsessively and watching MTV, and my dad was always showing me iconic records from the ’60s and ’70s.
My parents eventually split, childhood disappeared quickly, and life became confusing. Music, particularly songwriting, became an escape for me as it has been for so many others. It was something I could control. I could hole up in my room for hours with a guitar and write or learn a song.
It wasn’t until later that I realized the power of sharing these songs, how they could help others just like they helped me.
Who influenced your latest release ‘Cairo’?
Tyler, The Creator, St. Vincent, Thom Yorke, Kanye
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
What’s your dream venue to play?
The original Wembley Stadium. So much incredible history.
You have declared yourself as a ‘weirdo ginger’ what does that mean?
I grew up feeling socially awkward, am fond of David Lynch, have red hair, and see the world through an ironic lens. I want to give voice to all those who feel like outsiders.
Other than music, what are you passionate about?
Helping others reach their true creative potential.
What changes would you like to see in the music business?
Better data available to independent creators without fees. Standardized collaboration agreements. More opportunities for direct-to-consumer transactions across all streaming platforms. More acknowledgement to songwriters: without songs, there is no music business.
What is your favourite song to play live?
Any song that brings live music back!
Previously, you had a project with an alter-ego named Jimmy, what happened to Jimmy?
Jimmy gave me an opportunity to create art; I would never have dared to make otherwise. It broke me out of my shell, and I wouldn’t be the artist I am today without that project. Jimmy may be back in the future, but for now, he’s just out on a walk.
