Music Interview: The Violet Stones

Sydney-based band The Violet Stones, have released their brilliant single ‘Guinea Pig’, in September 2020. Read our full interview today!

What is your songwriting process?

For the majority of our songs, Sarah usually brings us a song that she’s written and we all build upon that. Although recently we have written a couple of songs that had started whilst jamming together and just coming up with a riff on bass and then the drums which is the opposite to what we have always done.

‘Guinea Pig’ however, was first written by Sarah and then brought to us to build upon. She actually uploaded a version of it on her youtube channel before it became a Violet Stones song.

Tell us about your latest release ‘Guinea Pig’?

We wrote ‘Guinea Pig’ a while back (maybe around two years ago?) and we had released a live version of it in 2018 meaning we had some people ask us to release a proper version of it.

So that pushed us to release it as a single haha along with all the other songs on our album, we recorded everything in Sarah’s home studio, and it was mixed/mastered by Benedikt Hain.

We read that, ‘Guinea Pig’ touches on the subjects of religious hypocrisies, what inspired the song?

I guess just current events. Nothing really specific inspired it, I just tend to write about general things that bother me. If I were to say what inspired it, it would probably be the gay marriage vote we had a few years back.

I find it super hypercritical how some people justified voting ‘no’ because of the bible but then don’t have a problem with other things the bible doesn’t see as ‘right’ such as divorce.

What’s the music scene like in Sydney?

It really depends on the area and the genre you play. There’s also been a lot of venues closing down recently which doesn’t help. I’d say clubs are way more popular than local band shows which sucks.

Who are your musical influences?

Our main influences would be Nirvana, System of a Down, Silverchair, Korn & Tired Lion.

Who are your non-musical influences?

We’re not really sure if we have any! All our influences are musical that we can think of…

What’s the best gig that you have ever played?

We played a festival up in Queensland (first time we toured out of our state) & people really got into it. Jarrod ended up standing on the barrier whilst playing a solo; people were moshing… it was super cool.

We were told after that a couple of people had found out we were coming and specifically came to see us which was wild cause we weren’t that big at all.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

We’d say self-doubt and consistency. It’s really hard to stay consistent in today’s standard as social media has really taken over. You’re expected to post a certain amount of times, and you have to constantly be thinking about how to market yourself. It can be super draining, we’ve found anyway.

That’s been the biggest obstacle for us, but I think another huge obstacle we have seen with a lot of artists is being too hard on yourself and being too scared to just put yourself out there, especially when you’re comparing yourself to others. It’s always important to believe in yourself & not give up (as cheesy as that sounds).

What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting out?

If you’re in a band, communication is super important. You all need to be on the same page and have the same goals. It won’t work if you’re not all as committed.

It also helps if you’re all good friends, haha. We also think that talking to people is really important (after shows etc.). It’s really about who you know, especially in this industry.

What are your hopes for the next two years?

We really miss playing live music and can’t wait till everything’s back to normal. We would love to go on a proper tour around Australia and maybe release another album in the next two years. It’s our first time starting with no songs, so we’re really excited to see where this will take us.
