How did you first get into music?

I was raised on traditional music, had my grandfather’s fiddle in my hands since I was a youngster. The first music that reached me though was Nirvana, actually a best-of compilation album called ‘Nirvana’.

What is the first song that captured your attention as a youngster?

‘Stand By Me’ was the first song I learned on guitar and I remember singing it for month

Who influenced your latest release ‘Runny Nose’?

Instrumentally, I believe I was listening to a lot of Vulfpeck at the time, so I’m sure they’re in there somewhere. Lyrically it came directly from an experience I had while dating a girl for a short spell during the winter’ 18/’19.

‘Runny Nose’ is a funny-folk classic. What inspires you to add comedy into your music?

So the comedy usually happens by accident, but when I’ve been asked about this before, I always say this. Songwriters have to spend a lot of time “hanging out” with a single feeling when crafting a song, exploring its nooks and crannies. I used to get sad spending too much time with sad emotions, so I used to add lyrics to lighten my mood.

What draws you to the folk-pop genre?

The boring answer is I started writing songs on an acoustic guitar, and it’s hard to escape the folk genre with it I guess. I like the percussive nature of an acoustic guitar, though and being an ex-drummer, I’ve always found rhythm fun. My pop sensibilities come from being a giant John Mayer geek among others.

What motivates you to make music?

I feel I’m an entertainer at heart and have always loved moving people in any way possible. I always get a massive kick out of performing live #lookatme. Add to that, people applauding for something you’ve created… forget about it (read like a New Yorker from the 60s).

What’s your favourite venue to play?

Oh boy. The most acoustic friendly, I guess. I’ve been lucky enough to play at a church in London a few times called St. Johns Hoxton, and it’s always a bit of an orgasmic experience. I’ve actually shot two live sessions there too that you can check out on YouTube #promotionneverends.

What are your other passions aside from music?

People. I’m fascinated by them and will be eternally curious. I also suffer from ‘can’t sit still’ syndrome, so I run/cycle a lot.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Ha! Well, I’ve only been a professional musician in the age of streaming… so it’s to pick, SOCIAL MEDIA!! I’d kill it with a large blunt stick.

What new music are you listening to at the moment?

When I’m not listening to my own recent creations/works in progress… I’ve been going through an Incubus phase recently. Also digging some new Jacob Collier stuff, ‘He Won’t Hold You’ performed on the Tiny Desk (Home) Concert is sooooooo good.

What musical plans do you have for the next two years?

Oh boy. Release, gig, release, gig, release, fingers crossed tour? Release, rest. I’ve started working on the next EP already to follow Rookie Mistakes. Just going to keep throwing music at the world. See what happens.
