We were lucky enough to catch up with musician COLETTE LUSH following the release of her super duet with John Lindahl, ‘My List’. Enjoy now!
How did you first get into music?
I did school plays and talent shows. When I was 15, I started writing and had a minor deal with Disney. Left in search of my “sound” and moved on to be an independent artist in R&B!
What is the first song that captured your attention as a youngster?
‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ by Etta James.
Who influenced your latest release ‘My List’?
Classic Hollywood heartthrobs like Cary Grant and Paul Newman 😉
You worked with John Lindahl on ‘My List’, what sparked the collaboration?
John is actually my favourite producer/writer to work with; we have this really complementary relationship. He’s produced most of my releases!
You are an American Idol alumni; how did that platform affect your career?
It helped grow my audience and taught me that I could perform under intense pressure.
What are your other passions aside from music?
I love pole fitness, reading, hiking with my dog Arya, and finding the best boba spots in town.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I’d change the dynamic between most producers and artists. There’s this unspoken sexual tension that’s present. I’ve had a lot of sessions where producers have inappropriate expectations of female artists.
What is the best music advice you have ever been given?
If you know what it feels like to want something and then lose it, you should never run out of songs to write.
What new music are you listening to at the moment?
I’m a creature of habit and tend to listen to my favourite albums on repeat. Lately, I’ve been listening to the new Miley Cyrus album as well as J. Cole’s Dreamville album.
What musical plans do you have for the next two years?
I plan to release two projects in 2021. I’d love to tour and grow my audience as much as possible!
