We were lucky enough to catch up with Cape Cod-based artist Tragically Magic who has released the brilliant single ‘From The Ashes’. Enjoy!

Tell us about yourself?

I was born and raised in Cape Cod, MA. Originally, I was a boxer with an unmatched determination that led to me being undefeated during my time competing.

After a severe and life long injury, I was turned away from the boxing world and had to find a new industry to call home and make a legacy that would remain long after I was gone. With the intent to send a message of perseverance, I began writing and recording songs in early 2019 with the same determination that I had during my boxing days.

What is your songwriting process?

Whether it’s a single word, or phrase, or just a concept that I heard or seen, I start off with a title or idea of the song in mind. I sit down with something rhythmic, either music or just a repetitive noise, to keep a continuous tempo in mind, and start writing. Usually, within 20 minutes, the entire song has created itself through my fingertips.

Tell us about your latest release ‘From The Ashes’?

‘From the Ashes’ is by far my personal favourite to date. With an old school vibe with the beat, to the call to action or taking control of your life, to the personal relation encouraging anyone that they can change their life for the better too, it’s a vibe I can leave on repeat. With its release just on the 15th of January, ‘From the Ashes’ is my first release of the year, starting it off with positivity and ambition all the way.

Your debut track ‘Best of It’ was released in 2019, how has your writing style progressed since then?

‘Best of It’ was my first time writing a song entirely, along with the first track to have a message before I truly came to find my vocal style and comfort zone. Since hand, I’m faster, clearer, more intricate with my lyrics with more life behind every line. Near feels like a whole lifetime away looking back on it now.

You are a prolific writer, where do you draw your inspiration from?

I’d say about 95% of my inspiration comes from my own personal life and the trials I went through to be the person standing behind the microphone today. The rest is from passions like boxing and dreams yet to be lived that give a different outlook through lyrics.

Writing is near second nature to me, so I can reference the same timeframe or event in my life 5-10 different ways to include in completely different songs with different tempos and emotions, making the amount of songs I’ve written to date only a tenth of what I can do in just minutes.

What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?

Through feedback, a lot of my fans have told me I give them hope. That no matter how bad their situation is right now, they can make it through and really take their lives into their hands. I’ve also been told my songs are motivational and inspirational, encouraging them to not quit on their path in their life.

Who are your non-musical influences?

Muhammad Ali, I’ve always looked up to. From his boxing style to his determination, to his ideology that even before he proves it, he’s the greatest because he says he is. Even his quotes live long after him and are repeated daily, something I hope to have with my lyrics as well.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

Artists and Bands today have to deal with a lot of saturation in streaming platforms. With so many artists, bands, hobbyists, releasing works nonstop at all times, it’s hard to be seen above the rest. This and paywalls are making a career in music more of an investment than a start-up business.

What are your hopes for the next two years?

In the next two years, I’m looking to not only far surpass my current releases stat and impact wise, but to really be seen as an icon of perseverance.
