We were fortunate enough to catch up with the superb Birmingham-based artist Pavit Sanghera, for an interview. She has released her infectious alternative-pop single ‘You Ran Away’, in May 2020. Check out our interview below!
Tell us about yourself?
I am a 21-Year-old R&B/Indian Fusion Singer-Songwriter based in Birmingham. I am trained in Indian Classical music, starting from when I lived in India. I have also lived in Spain for three years of my life, which was a great opportunity for me to understand their culture.
Tell us about your latest release?
‘You Ran Away’ is a heartbreak song at its core. With this song I wanted people to feel like they could relate which then, in turn, translates into them understanding and feeling the emotion behind the song on a deeper level as they relate it to their own experiences. The song tells a story about someone who walked away from me when I needed them the most and takes you on the journey of me getting over that and how at the end our tears will dry, and it won’t hurt as much.
What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?
When I was younger, I would always gravitate towards the sad songs. The songs that moved me and made me feel understood, and that’s what I want my music to convey. I want my fans to feel the emotion and feel understood no matter their background. As a British-Indian, there is not a lot of representation in the western music industry, and I want to be that representation for those girls, boys, woman and men.
Who are your non-musical influences?
My biggest influences are my family. Even though a career in music is not a highly sought out path in our culture, they have always stood by me and never left a stone unturned when it came to my musical journey.
What’s the best gig that you have ever played?
This might sound corny, but I love every experience I have at every gig! It’s always different even though you might be singing the same songs with the same people.
What is your funniest gig moment?
Has to be my awkward cringe self. I’m always just making a fool out of myself on stage, and people love it. At my latest gig I was introducing my song ‘Bhuljake’ which is a mixture of English and Hindi Lyrics and to me seeing people try and understand what I’m singing in the Hindi portion of the song is always hilarious. I always seem to have a disclaimer before playing that song saying “You’re not going to understand half the song, but you’ll still enjoy it, I think.”
What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?
I think the biggest obstacles are visibility, building a loyal fanbase and making a career. In today’s world, anyone and everyone can put their music out there on streaming sites which creates a tsunami of talent in which you could easily disappear in. Building up a fanbase is very hard nowadays too as everyone wants music on demand and wants lots of it without the need to become loyal fans. This also ties in with visibility where if your audience doesn’t come across your music in the first place, chances are you’re not going to be building a great fanbase.
What advice would you give to bands/artists starting out?
I would say if you really do want to be successful one of the things you must do is give your 100% to trying to make it. If you’re not giving your full attention to your craft your chances of succeeding are very low. Make sure you know your sound and your brand as an artist or band before you start putting out music or advertising yourselves.
What are your hopes for the next two years?
I hope to have released a lot of music each better than the last one. I would hope to create a loyal fanbase that understands my music and maybe even make my way into the mainstream music industry. This all might sound too ambitious, but I believe in manifestation and aiming high always gives you something to look forward to and makes you work even harder than you usually would.
