Hi Desmond, tell us about yourself?

I am a singer-songwriter out of the Washington, D.C., area. I’ve loved music ever since I can remember (about 3 or 4). I love not only listening to music but creating and writing it as well.

What is your songwriting process?

I usually find a chord progression that I like and which will normally be the foundation of this song. Next, I would usually write the hook or the chorus of the song, which is the main theme. Then, I would write verses that support the hook, and lastly, I would write the ad-lib vocals.

Tell us about your latest release, ‘Mend The Pieces’?

“Mend the pieces” was a song that I created in early 2022. It’s a plea from the protagonist to his new love interest to help them believe in love again.

What draws you to the R&B genre?

This was the first genre of music that I was introduced to add a very early age. My grandmother would often play music by R&B artists like Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, and Teddy Pendergrass. Also, I find this genre to be very expressive. There are so many ways to convey your message of love; whether it be break-up songs or happy songs, R&B resonates with my vibe of the music. However, I love all genres of music as well.

What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?

My goal as a songwriter is to write from the human experience. There are so many things that we experience throughout our life. As a writer, I definitely want to entertain. However, I also would like to encourage and inspire those that listen to my music. I would love for the listeners to walk away with a positive message about whatever they’re going through or how they’re feeling.

Who are your musical influences?

My first musical influence was and is Stevie Wonder. I’ve learned so much musically from him, from songwriting to production. Michael Jackson has also greatly impacted my passion for music from a performance standpoint. Both of their styles have greatly steered my direction with my music.

Who are your non-musical influences?

I love Kobe Bryant’s passion for basketball, and I watch the many inspirational videos he left behind regarding being at your best in any field, so I would definitely list him as an influence. Bruce Lee as well!

What’s the best gig that you have ever played?

The best gig I’ve played was a holiday party years ago. The exchange of energy between the audience and my band was so phenomenal!! If I were going to stage dive, it would be this show!

What is your funniest gig moment?

My funniest gig moment would have been someone randomly running up on the stage to ask what songs we were going to play while we were performing. Hilarious!!

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

I think the biggest obstacle is getting your music/brand in front of everyone. There are so many artists with great music that are flooding the market that it’s hard for anyone to focus on one act/band lots of times.

What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting out?

I would say be original. We are all influenced by someone, but find those things that make you ‘you’. This is what will be recognized by your audience/followers.

What are your hopes for the next two years?

My hopes are to continue making music and to tour the States and the U.K.
