Tell us about yourself?
I’m a multi-disciplinary artist living in Los Angeles, California.
I started creating music in 2019 as a means to heal and reinvent myself and my creativity. I believe in creating and following your own path in life. And although it might sound cheesy, my goal is to inspire and help people to live their truth and pursue their passions.
What is your songwriting process?
My songwriting process is all over the place. I write and produce music using pseudo/post-modern art techniques coupled with my version of the ‘Rick Rubin method’ of reduction. Most often, I start with lyrics and let the words guide the way. Other times, I begin with a specific emotion or memory and try to find chords that match or are in juxtaposition to that emotion.
Tell us about your latest release ’91 Movement’?
’91 Movement’ is a six-song journey and creative awakening. It was created from a fine art perspective with the goal of sharing my inner thoughts and emotions as a form of catharsis and to encourage others to confront their deepest feelings and fears. ’91 Movement’ was created to be listened to in its entirety. I’m asking folks to listen to the EP as if you’ve walked into a gallery space and you’re taking in each song as if they were individual pieces of art in a curated exhibition.
’91 Movement’ is Trip-Hop in nature, what draws you to the genre?
I like to think that my music is genre-less, but I’ve been told a few times my music has a trip-hop feel. I’ve even been compared to Tricky, which is a major compliment! I’ve always been attracted to artists and music that doesn’t quite fit into a specific genre and most of the celebrated trip-hop artists are super innovative and it’s hard to define them. I’m a huge fan of Portishead, Massive Attack, Four Tet and Lamb. All their music gives me that feeling of raw emotion, and that’s something I’m trying to do with my music.
The release of ’91 Movement’ is accompanied by a new website and merch, what else can fans expect in the near future?
Y’all can expect Jōviky to keep creating experiences through music and stretching the art-form.
I have a free mixtape dropping on SoundCloud in February or March that consists of a lot of the first tracks I made in 2019 when I began experimenting with music. I also have a podcast episode of “The Slapback Indie Show” that will be released toward the end of January 2021 on all podcast platforms.
Who are your musical influences?
There are really too many to name but here are a few…
Quincy Jones, Diddy, Kanye, De La Soul, Mazzy Star, GZA, Pearl Jam, Rick Rubin, Jon Brion, Andre 3000, Prince, Pharrell, Mos Def, Beck and Mac Miller.
Who are your non-musical influences?
I’m inspired by great storytellers that happen to be designers, artists, filmmakers, choreographers, dancers and writers. Here are a few…
Virgil Abloh, Stephen King, Michael Peters, Jerome Robbins, Basquiat, Ava DuVernay, Jimmy Slyde, Shane Black, James Baldwin, Stanley Donen, John Favreau, Zack Snyder, Mark Rothko, Tarsem, Bob Fosse, Tony Scott.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?
I think the biggest challenge is breaking through all the noise. There is so much amazing music and overall content out there, and it’s really hard to grab people’s attention without trolling or doing something crazy.
What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting out?
My advice is to just create music that you love. Don’t try to chase what other artists are doing. At the end of the day, you’ll be happier with creating something you can stand behind and be proud of no matter what.
What are your hopes for the next two years?
As far as my music, I’m manifesting growing my audience to a point where I can start touring and putting on a dope multi-media/music show. I’m hoping to do more collaborations, and I would also love to get on the festival circuit when things start opening back up (crossing my fingers).
I’d also like to help other weird artists (like me) find their voice and gain the courage to start releasing music.
