We caught up with the London-based band Modern Guilt following the release of their latest single, ‘Hoping For The Hoping’ in September 2020. Read the full interview now!
How did you first get together?
Two of us met by chance in a pub as our previous projects ended and just got talking. We were looking for something new to sink our teeth into, and here we are.
We see your first gig was at O2 Academy Islington just before the first lockdown, what was that like?
It was brilliant; it underpinned why we do what we do. To hear the crowd and the reception we got.
Who influenced your latest release?
When we got together for our first rehearsal to see what sound we were looking for with the new band, the basis of this track was what we wrote right at the end of that. Tying in the 60s and 70s sounds, we wanted to write something that put a bit of a swagger in your walk.
‘Hoping for the Hoping’ has an accompanying video shot by Carl Fox, what brought you and Carl together?
Carl is friends with our producer (Mikey Buckley), and around the time we went into the studio, we linked up with him, and he came in to do some shots of us recording. He’s worked with musicians and bands for years and as we started to talk about shooting the video for ‘Hoping For The Hoping’ we thought he’d be a great fit for what we wanted to achieve.
If you could open for any artist/band who would it be?
Difficult to decide, but to name a few… The Rolling Stones, The hives, Pulp, Cage The Elephant, The Strokes, Beck, Primal Sceam, The Black Keys, BRMC, QOTSA…
What’s your favourite venue to play?
Koko (Camden) was probably a favourite, back in Edinburgh there’s a venue called Cabaret Voltaire, also loved playing 12 Bar Club (Denmark Street) before it closed.
What are your other passions aside from music?
Football, house red, video games, poetry, daytime television, especially quizzes, Supermarket Sweep’s comeback has been huge.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Right now live shows aren’t happening and who knows when they will again, and without the live shows the revenue streams of musicians has been fully gutted and hung out to dry. It would be great to see a sustainable balance come into the industry, especially for smaller and upcoming artists.
What new music are you listening to at the moment?
Baxter Drury’s Night Chancers Michael Kiwanuka’s new album was stunning, and it’s great to see him win the Mercury Prize. Fontaines DC is a treat.
What musical plans do you have for the next two years?
We’ve never wanted to write a musical 😉
But we have reimagined the release of our first EP which is in the works. Then due to the uncertainty of when we can play again, we are going to focus on studio work and begin the second EP, by the time those are done and seducing your earholes hopefully we can play live.
