How Do Mailing Lists Work?

Home » Music Blogs » How Do Mailing Lists Work?

In the last 7 years of running FVMusicBlog, I have written 2,314 blogs about DIY musicians’ releases…

And every single piece of coverage has the same thing in common.

They all contain links to the artist or band’s website/social pages.

Why is this link so important?

All roads should lead back to the band or artist’s mailing list.

Your mailing list is the single most important asset you own.

Growing it month by month creates opportunities for your music to be heard, with fans who repeatedly come back for more, buy your releases, and support your music.

The link for people to sign up for your list should be at the heart of your online presence.

From your website to your social media pages, your sign-up form for your mailing list should be the first thing new fans see.

But how does email marketing for musicians actually work?

#1 Hosting – The artist chooses a company to host their Mailing List, such as Mailchimp, Convertkit or Aweber. (This is where the email address you collect will be stored and where you can directly email people who have joined your list).

#2 Sign-up URL – The artist creates a Landing Page or a Sign-Up form where people are offered an exclusive incentive like a free live recording, a previously released song or a remix in exchange for their email address.

#3 Free Gift – When someone subscribes to your list by entering their email address, they automatically receive an automated welcome email delivering your free gift and a series of prewritten emails designed to build connections between you and your new sign-ups.

#4 Send Emails – (Important: This is a crucial step many musicians get wrong). Periodically, the artist or band sends emails to their mailing list, filling them in on where they’re playing, what they’re working on, and where merch and new releases can be bought or streamed. So many artists or bands do all the hard work getting people to join their list and never send emails. If someone joins your list, they say, “TALK TO ME”, so keep in contact!

#5 Growth – Continue to grow your list each month, delete people who never open your emails, and enjoy talking to the ones who do. It’s better to have 100 engaged subscribers who open your emails and answer your questions than 10,000 subscribers who never open a single email.

This is easy to set up and can be done in an afternoon.

Delivering your free gift and a series of welcome emails can all be automated and delivered automatically when someone enters their email address, saving you time.

Easy.

AND!

If you are ready to get started…

Here’s a free training on STEP-BY-STEP setting up your mailing list from scratch.

Once your mailing list is up and running, you can leave it on autopilot while you work on new music or promote your current releases.

All you need to work on is sending traffic (people) to your landing page or sign-up form and sending out regular emails to your list.

In the beginning, email marketing can feel overwhelming, but once the benefits start rolling in and you’ve done it a few times, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it before.
