MILYAM – “Intimacy”
Birmingham-based artist MILYAM is carving out a distinctive space with her latest release, “Intimacy” — a track that leans into atmosphere, emotion, and cinematic depth over traditional structure. Blending elements of R&B, Soul, and downtempo electronic production, the single feels less like a standalone song and more like an immersive experience designed for late-night listening.
As both an independent artist and the founder of MILYAM EMPIRE, she approaches her work with complete creative control, shaping a sound that prioritises feeling, space, and storytelling. We caught up with MILYAM to talk about the vision behind “Intimacy,” her approach to building atmosphere in music, and why she sees each release as part of a much bigger artistic world.
“Intimacy” is described as a cinematic experience rather than just a song — what does ‘cinematic’ mean to you in the context of music, and how did that shape this release?
For me, music is first and foremost about visual images. When I write, I see entire scenes, like in a movie. “Cinematic” is the ability of sound to transport the listener to another space, creating a three-dimensional picture in their mind. In “Intimacy,” I wanted every sound to feel like a frame from a film about the most sacred and private moments.
You position yourself as the architect of a new atmospheric sound — what were you consciously trying to do differently with “Intimacy” compared to typical R&B or downtempo releases?
I strived to move away from standard structures. My goal was to create not just a rhythm, but a living atmosphere that breathes together with the listener. I added more “air” and emotional depth so that the music would envelop the listener, rather than just playing in the background.
There’s a strong sense of “late-night energy” in the record — what emotions or moments were you trying to capture within that space?
Night is a time of the greatest honesty with oneself. In “Intimacy,” I captured moments of silence, when the masks are off and only true feelings remain. It is the energy of trust, warmth, and that very light that is born in the darkness.
Your work blends minimalist “old money” aesthetics with soulful vocal expression — how do you balance restraint with emotional depth in your production and performance?
For me, “Old Money” minimalism represents dignity and purity of lines. I try to make sure my vocals don’t “overpower” the music, but rather complement it. The restraint in the arrangement allows the emotions in my voice to sound even more piercing and sincere.

As both an artist and the founder of MILYAM EMPIRE, how does having full creative control influence the way a release like “Intimacy” comes together?
For me, this means a total immersion into my inner world, focusing on myself and the sensation that I feel and convey to this world through my songs. Each track is a very personal story about my deep experience that I want to share with those who feel the same in the moment, so that people know they are not alone in this. In every song, there lies more than just words. Behind every verse stands a long journey that has changed me very much.
Your music has been described as “hypnotic” and “immersive” — what specific choices (vocally or production-wise) help you achieve that effect?
I think that I simply convey what is inside me through my voice. I sing as I feel. I try to more deeply reveal my inner world and everything that has accumulated in it. I convey the sensations that I want to keep in my memory and I want there to be a total immersion in these moments. I just trust the moment and the flow of my feelings.

With your catalog preserved in the U.S. Library of Congress, there’s a clear focus on legacy — how does that long-term vision impact the way you approach each release?
The fact that my songs are registered in the US Library of Congress is the merit of my mom, who is currently managing my label. She said right away that my creativity deserves to be heard by the whole world; she wanted to make my work global and believed that my songs heal souls. And I am very grateful to her for this. If it weren’t for her, my songs would have remained in an archive on my computer.
“Intimacy” sits at the intersection of R&B, Soul, and cinematic electronic production — do you see genre as something you’re working within, or something you’re deliberately moving beyond?
I think that music is more than just a style. I think that the main thing is the emotions and feelings that it evokes; I think music is the language of the soul on which people can communicate through space and time. I don’t just go beyond boundaries — I am creating my own world where the only rules are dictated by my voice.
For me, each of my songs is a personal story and a soul-to-soul conversation.
There’s a strong visual identity tied to your music — how important is visual storytelling when building a world around a release like this?
I write the lyrics to my songs by completely immersing myself in the moment, and I want a person, after listening to a song, to have the feeling that they have read a book. I use a lot of figurative lyrics so that a person visualizes the full picture of each story and maybe finds, even in these images that everyone draws in their head, an immersion into their own experience that had great importance in their life.

For listeners discovering you through “Intimacy,” what do you want them to feel — and what do you want them to understand about who MILYAM is as an artist?
I want them to continue to believe in love and light. I want to say that even in the darkest corner of life, a new bright beginning always comes. A beginning for a new intimacy and a new faith and a new love. I want to say that after the darkest night comes the brightest dawn.
I want my music to be a lighthouse — a guide from the darkness into the light. I also want my music to become the soundtrack to the most important moments of their lives.
