We caught up with Delta of Venus, following the superb release, ‘Disengaged b/w Slipping‘. Enjoy below!

Hi Delta of Venue, tell us about your superb latest release, ‘Disengaged b/w Slipping’.

We discussed at length the concept of releasing singles in the same manner The Smiths had done.

You began writing in 1993; how has your process changed since then?

In the early days, we were simply trying to figure out how to make it work! There was plenty of standard “rock band” jamming on ideas, but working with the sequencer; we eventually had to write the arrangement to the grid. Now, we write the music to the grid and then add the traditional “rock band” element.

You released an album in 1997, took a break and started again in 2022; what was that process like?

When we released “Make Yrself Xtra Special” in 1997, it was the culmination of everything we had worked to become. We were one of the few Mystic bands at the time who released a proper album.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough tangible success to justify continuing. And some of us were up against actual career pressures. The process of reassembling the band was quite arduous. Mat, Shawn, and Ellery live in Mystic, but Dawn had accepted a position in New Bedford, MA, that would be an inherent deterrent to reuniting the original group.

Having already tracked the songs at Dirt Floor Recording and Production in February of 2024, in an effort to provide Dawn with the proper framework of the material, the endeavour fell apart by June of 2024. Dawn wasn’t going to be a part of the new group.

You have a superb new vocalist, Issy; how has she changed your sound?

Dawn is an incredible voice, so the simple fact that Issy could fill in for Dawn was a major accomplishment. Having said that, what Issy brings is a completely different perspective.

What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?

That, if we can make music, anyone can.

What draws you to the shoegaze genre?

I suppose the fact that we were there.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

The fact that the indie label /touring network doesn’t exist anymore.

What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting?

There is only one reason to attempt this endeavour.

What are your hopes for the next two years?

Two more A-side singles through to Autumn 2025. And then…
