Music Interview: Hotel Mira

We were lucky enough to catch up with Hotel Mira following their stunning release ‘The View From The Barstool‘ for a full interview. Enjoy below!

Hi, Hotel Mira, tell us about yourselves.

Hi, our names are charlie, mike, clark and cole. We are a rock band who are trying to do something truly special with music. We hope to be your new favourite band.

Who influenced your brilliant latest release, ‘The View From The Barstool’?

Anderson Paak has a line on one of his songs where he says, “fuck fame, that shit killed all my favourite entertainers”. This song is an extension of that pretty much.

You’re from Canada; what’s the music scene like now, after COVID?

It’s alright. I think it’s always gonna have a couple extra layers to it because of COVID. Like we are so grateful we get to play live again and feel the irreplaceable joy, catharsis and energy of performing (knowing that it can be taken away from us in a heartbeat) and then also sometimes I am like, whoa. I hope no one in this crowd has COVID-19 because we are really sharing this air, space, etc.

You played at the awesome Great Escape Festival. What was that like?

That was wild. We didn’t get in! So we played the alt escape! And then someone, at the last minute, a band got sick, so we were allowed to play their official showcase. It was a ton of fun. We all love Brighton.

It’s like a British San Francisco. I get why Nick Cave lives there. And we hope we get to come back, especially now that they have cut ties with some of those corporate vampires that should have nothing to do with music festivals.

What’s your dream venue to play?

Any venue filled to the brim with music lovers. I love a good dive bar with history. But our music also feels like it feels really the way it is supposed to in an arena/theater.

‘The View From The Barstool’ is an addictive indie-pop single; what draws you to the genre?

Y’know, I think it’s just what I and Mikey grew up on and always adored. And I love how we have found a way to communicate big difficult ideas using pop as this incredible trojan horse.

What changes would you like to see in the music business?

How much time do you have? The industry is so broken it is genuinely perplexing to talk about. It’s hard to know where to start. Pay artists more. Create infrastructure so more than just the wealthy elite can participate.

Give more opportunities for the marginalized groups, as they will probably have the most interesting, relatable and groundbreaking stories to tell, simply via the constant that the best stuff always comes from people who have to carve their own path because not enough people are giving them a chance. Support local artists.

What would it be if you could choose one thing for fans to take away from your music?

Corny as it sounds, I think I just want people to know that the pain we are in should bring us together to be kinder and not drive us apart with violence and fear.

What is your favourite song to play live?

Speaking off the record. It is a sing-a-long almost every night.

Have you started working on your next release?

Yes. And oh boy, are you in for a treat.
