Italian singer-songwriter LESS returns with “Instead of Making Love,” a deeply introspective and sonically rich track recorded entirely through analog machines at Kapow Vintage Studio. The single captures a striking blend of psychedelic rock textures, vulnerability, and raw emotional honesty, offering listeners a glimpse into the artist’s evolving world.
At once nostalgic and forward-looking, the song marks a pivotal moment in LESS’s creative journey — exploring identity, emotional hunger, and the art of surrender. In this interview with FVMusicBlog, LESS reflects on working with Lorenzo Santi, Federico Maremmi, and Marco Lega, finding freedom in imperfection, and how music continues to be a shelter through change, reflection, and growth.
“Instead of Making Love” was recorded entirely through analog machines at Kapow Vintage Studio — how did that vintage process shape the sound and emotion of the track?
The whole album was recorded with analog machines, but what’s even more “analog” is the way we worked. It really comes from blending my music with that of my producers; they live and breathe analog, so the whole process naturally took on that texture and warmth.
The song feels like a turning point, both musically and personally. What does “Instead of Making Love” represent for you as you step into adulthood as an artist?
Over time, I realized I’d spent so much energy trying to feel something when all I really needed was to just let go. I don’t think that’s necessarily about becoming an adult; it’s more about understanding my constant hunger for emotions, which kind of keeps me forever sixteen.
You’ve described music as your “shelter” during challenging times. How did those early experiences of change and self-discovery find their way into this song?
Music has always been a safe place for me, no matter the song. The simple act of making music helps me discover more about myself and turn my experiences into something tangible each time.
Working with Lorenzo Santi, Federico Maremmi, and Marco Lega sounds like a close creative family. What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned from that collaboration?
I’ve learned to see how much I still don’t know compared to their experience and knowledge, and how beautiful that is. I’ve also learned how to merge our ideas into something we all love (which isn’t easy!) and, most of all, to never stop playing.
There’s a beautiful tension in your songs between vulnerability and strength. When you write, do you tend to start from pain, reflection, or inspiration?
Mostly from reflection and pain, but I think those are the key ingredients for inspiration. When I’m happy, I’m usually out there living those emotions to the fullest, not locked in my room writing. That’s why music becomes my shelter when things hurt.
You’ve mentioned the challenges of being an artist writing original music in English in Italy. What keeps you motivated to keep creating and breaking through those barriers?
Absolutely. I dream of change, and I truly believe it’ll come. In the meantime, I just keep going, never stop.
Sonically, “Instead of Making Love” leans into psychedelic rock atmospheres. What inspired that direction, and how does it connect to your emotional world?
It’s really the blend of my musical instincts and my producers’ backgrounds, which are mainly rooted in rock. Each song then takes on its own shades and moods naturally, depending on its spirit.

Your lyrics often explore identity, love, and self-awareness. What message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from this release?
I always hope listeners make the songs their own, that they connect them to their own feelings and experiences, without thinking too much about who wrote them, but just letting the music take over.
You’ve been writing songs since you were 12 — how has your songwriting evolved as you’ve grown into the woman and artist you are today?
It’s honestly hard to explain; it just happened. I decided that’s what I wanted to do, and I never stopped. When you keep at it long enough, you naturally get better.
Finally, what’s next for you after “Instead of Making Love” — are you already working on new material, live performances, or a larger project?
A bit of everything, really! I’m working on new material, live shows, and new projects all at once. I hope this song opens new paths; it’s all about growing, both musically and personally.
