We were lucky enough to catch up with Monroe Moon following the release of their superb single ‘WAR’. Read the full interview now!

Hi Monroe Moon, how did you first get into music?

Theo bought musical instruments for our five children one Christmas. The setup was in the basement, and I started sneaking up late at night with insomnia to mess about with the electric drum kit because I could plug in headphones and keep quiet. I didn’t think anyone noticed, but then one night, Theo came and joined me…

You are a married duo; what’s it’s like being married and making music together?

We are having a lot of fun! It has its challenges for sure, but so does everything. Creating art is often an act of deep self-discovery. Having a partner to journey with is an amazing fortune. It keeps us grounded and motivated.

Who influenced your latest release, ‘WAR’?

The War criminals that run our global governments and the media machine that runs cover for them and lies to shape public opinion.

We see ‘WAR’ was written in 2021, but it is even more relevant today. What would you like people to take away with them after hearing the single?

We hope that listeners are inspired to raise their voices for peace, to end war. And to dig a little deeper behind the headlines. There are bombs being dropped on innocent civilians across the globe, paid for by our tax dollars, and we don’t know even know about it.

You recorded ‘WAR’ at Virtue & Vice Studios; what was the recording process?

Virtue & Vice Studios is so choice! It is a beautiful studio. We recorded there with Alex Almgren of Freshly Baked Studios. He made the entire process easy and fun. He’s a visionary and all-around great human.

What motivates you to make music?

For me personally, music is not a matter of motivation. It feels more like Theo hammered a spile into my heart, and now music just drips and pours from me. Sometimes I catch it in a bucket; sometimes, I let it soak into the earth.

What are your other passions aside from music?

We have a large family, and that is our main passion. To create a good life for our children, so they can build themselves into good people and have a positive effect on the world. We work hard together to live eco-consciously, to live healthy, to keep spiritually grounded, and to enjoy the little things.

That said, I am writing a couple of children’s books currently, and Theo is always fussing with his guitar collection.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Spotify streaming royalties percentages for artists.

What is the best music advice you have ever been given?

We really haven’t been given much advice so much as encouragement. But I think that is a form of advice, to believe in oneself. That’s the advice I give.

What new music are you listening to at the moment?

We are into the new Cat Power ‘Covers’ album & Damon Albarn’s ‘The Nearer The Fountain, The More Pure The Stream Flows’ They are two of our favourite artists. And while it’s not new, Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘1996’ is also on repeat right now.

What musical plans do you have for the next two years?

We have two more singles to release this year from our session with Alex at Virtue & Vice. We have a lot of new music and quite a backlog that we are currently working on and polishing. We have a couple more songs coming soon that we are doing through Local Legends studio here in West Michigan, where we recorded Breath(e). We will be consistently releasing music. We also hope to get some performance dates in the books in both the US and the UK.
