We were lucky enough to catch up with ReSeT Ryan Tram following the superb album release, ‘Digital Voyage, Vol. 1’. Enjoy our full interview below!
Hi ReSeT Ryan Tram, what is your earliest music memory?
My earliest music memory is probably sitting at my cousin’s house next door at the time, and I used to play chopsticks and the Oriental riff on the black keys, hahaha. I didn’t realize at the time how music was going to change my life. Still, I always did enjoy any opportunity I got to play those simple tunes on any piano I crossed by when I was a kid.
How did you get into the music industry?
I’m still up and coming myself, but just making fun YouTube videos and releasing music outside of my regular job helped cement me where I am today. I also pursued music education throughout my Undergrad and my Masters, and those opportunities definitely helped give me more time and effort to use my classwork as part of my own music.
Who influenced your brilliant latest release, ‘Digital Voyage, Vol. 1’?
There are notable influences throughout the album! Porter Robinson has had a significant influence on the tracks, which is evident in the songwriting and production style. Madeon and ABSRDST also play a role in the album’s sound. The cuter elements I take inspiration from Snail’s House and the blue shirt. I also wanted to share that Flume was a major inspiration for the middle section of the last track on the album, Painted Sky, which goes way more hardcore with the texture and noise music.
‘Digital Voyage, Vol. 1’ is a full album release; what made you decide to release an album over singles?
That’s a good question. I did release a few singles to promote the release of the whole album, but that’s completely different from a regular single release. Digital Voyage is ultimately a story of two people looking for each other. And this story wouldn’t have been able to be told cohesively through a series of single releases.
What draws you to the EDM genre?
Sound design absolutely enthrals me. It fascinates me that sound has infinite possibilities and that we can express emotion and movement through sound itself. It helps if the music is vibey enough to dance and move to, but that isn’t the main focus. I’m really drawn to the lush, wide chords and being able to cram and sprinkle so much ear candy and details throughout the entire song.
A full VFX trailer will accompany the release. Can you tell us about its concept?
Yeah! The VFX trailer ultimately sets up the album’s central story of the two characters trying to find each other. The VFX trailer shows the bond between the two characters, Red and Blue, and the moments before they are separated. I always envisioned the song Elevate to be about a portal traversing between worlds, so I needed to set up a situation where people are being transported into this world I am creating. I needed a backstory of these characters as well.
What changes would you like to see in the music business?
It’s never been easier to start creating anything in the music business. Still, I’d love to see more resources or accessibility in sync! I feel like that can be challenging to get into without the proper contact.
Other than music, what are you passionate about?
I am a huge Nintendo gamer, haha. I love video games, as apparent in some of the samples and chiptune aesthetic on some tracks. I am big on The Legend of Zelda as I’m a big fan of the action puzzle adventure sort of game with a large epic quest. The soundtrack, storytelling, and immersiveness are all amazing! If it isn’t apparent, I am also very passionate about visuals. I got into glitch art over the past few years, and much like the grimy coarse textures in heavier sound design, I love how grungy and glitched-out the graphics can look to evoke nostalgia, technology, and visual distortion.
What would it be if you could choose one thing for fans to take away from your music?
I hope fans can see the world-building and story throughout the songs and trailer, as ultimately the trailer sets up the whole events of the album itself. I also hope fans can connect with the lyrics to their own life as the songs are about different feelings surrounding separation. Many people have been in a situation where they can no longer see someone in their life anymore.
Have you started working on your next release?
Definitely! I have a backlog of demos I’m working through by myself, with select collaborators, and even starting up a new duo project. I hope fans stick around for Digital Voyage, Vol. 2 and my other upcoming music projects!
