Tim Mechling – ‘The Decline of the Flies and the Rise of Spiders’
Hailing from Mount Vernon, musician Tim Mechling has released the stunning album ‘The Decline of the Flies and the Rise of Spiders’. It is an alt-folk release that you need to know about this Autumn.
The opening track gently swims into the sonic spectrum, setting the scene for what is to come. ‘The American Civil War’ features a dark and brooding vibe with marching guitars, mysterious instrumentation and compelling nature.
‘The Arsonist’ is a stand-out song with gorgeous guitar licks, melodic bass and a stoic rhythm section. In addition, we enjoyed ‘Sebastian & Kip (Fall)’. Again, the excellent songwriting shines, underpinned by excellent musicianship and a compelling vibe.
Finally, “Rain on a Rusted Rifle (Spring) closes the release, and it will have you reaching for the repeat button.

Mechling comments, “The Decline of the Flies and the Rise of the Spiders” is a horrific freak-folk album about death, sin, war, lust, murder, rebirth and all things southern gothic in-between.”
He continues, “It features an epic overture, eerie soundscapes, spoken word passages, murder ballads, over-the-top guitar solos, drunken preacher sermons, and so much more. Like a Pink Floyd album, it was made to be listened to continuously from A-Z. Most of the songs bleed into one another with transitions.”
Influences
Tim Mechling cites his influences as coming from artists such as Cormac McCarthy, Tom Waits, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Pink Floyd, Swans, Robert Crumb, and Steven Jesse Bernstein. We can hear these muses coming through on ‘The Decline of the Flies and the Rise of Spiders’, but Tim Mechling is making music all of his own.
Musicians
Tim Mechling has been joined by musicians Hannah Wyatt (violin, harmonies, spoken word), John Swanke (electric guitar) and Tad Kroening (spoken word) on the release. Together the team have constructed a piece of art that will stand the test of time!
