Ambient Jazz Ensemble (AJE) – ‘Scars’
Ambient Jazz Ensemble (AKA Colin Baldry), has released the stunning single ‘Scars’ today, 16th October 2020.
A beautiful string arrangement and stunning vocals open the release. They instantly demand the listener’s attention and draw us into the song. Wonderful horns enter, and the piece is gracefully guided along by the main rich and luscious melody.
As the drums breakthrough, the piece is taken in a new direction, while still maintaining a gorgeous groove which intoxicates the audience. There are layers of harmony that balance the piece, and it is a song which will have you reaching for the repeat button.
‘Scars’ feels like a cinematic film score. It is rich in heart and moves the listener effortlessly. We adore the intelligent arrangement of ‘Scars’, it fills the listener’s ears with classical jazz, and we feel that it is a classic, timeless song in the making.
Baldry has an incredible portfolio which includes playing and producing for labels such as RCA, Motown, Virgin & Capitol Records. He has arranged and conducted for The BBC Concert Orchestra and The City Of Prague Philharmonic. In addition, he has also performed at parties hosted by The Rolling Stones! All of this previous work is further testament to the talent we hear on ‘Scars’.
Influences
Baldry cites his influences as coming from old soul records such as Marvin Gaye’s ‘Trouble Man’, Marlena Shaw’s ‘California Soul’, Curtis Mayfield and genre-defying ‘Jaga Jazzist’. One thing is for sure; those iconic records are in good company with Ambient Jazz Ensemble.
