‘Calculating is Not the Same as Working Out’ is the brilliant debut EP by London based band, Brown Stratos. Indie Rock in genre, this EP needs to be heard!
The opening title track sets the scene beautifully as to what is to come. Its melodic groove and luscious harmonies are mesmerising. The atmospheric song, ‘110 Percent Of Nothing Is Still Something’ is hugely moving. Lyrically poetic and musically intelligent, it effortlessly captures the listener’s attention. ‘If Less Is More, Imagine How Much More Would Be’ and ‘A Metaphor Is a Simile, A Simile Is Like A Metaphor’ carry on the superb composition and execution.
Brown Stratos says, “Brown Stratos is two 42-year-old idiots making music in a bedroom studio – but it’s not as sh*t as it sounds. We grew up in Yorkshire together, playing in different bands, sharing riffs, listening to mostly similar music. As we got older, our tastes diverged, and our dreams of becoming rockstars were crushed by moving to London, getting jobs and lacking many specific talents.” They continue, “Now, still unencumbered by the willingness to be successful, we’ve created this band to make the music we want to hear.”
Comprised of band members Tom Stevens (guitar, drums, bass, vocals), and Matt Ford (guitar, vocals), Brown Stratos are a formidable duo. Citing their influences as, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pixies, Radiohead, Helmet, Queens of the Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, and many more, we think these artists are in good company with Brown Stratos.
