David Allen – ‘Judgement Day’

‘Judgement Day’ is the latest single to be released by musician David Allen. Taken from the album, ‘Regrets and Retribution’ (due for release on 7th February 2020), it is a punchy, hard-hitting song that leaves the listener wanting more.

The single opens with a big sound. Driving guitars, bass and drums guide the song forward, and the pace they set is unrelenting throughout. The is a slide guitar that adds colour and texture to the piece, and it instantly grabs the listener’s attention.

We adored the use of the organ; it sets the scene and mixed with the acoustic guitar and vocal allows all of the instrumentation to come together seamlessly. The rhythms and melodies are varied, creating interest and intrigue too.

We instantly fell in love with Allen’s voice; it is gruff, filled with character and nuance. The dark lyrics of death are hard-hitting and relatable. All of this is further enhanced by the main hook that is memorable and stays with the listener long after the music has ended.

Allen describes his songs as being “Of lost love and unwanted change with a unique voice stained by cheap cigarettes and alcohol.” This honesty and passion come through on ‘Judgement Day’. There is a deep tapestry of life that emanates from the song, and we feel it is filled with genuine heart.

Allen is multitalented, and plays, Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Drums, and also provides the luscious vocals on the release too. Citing his influences as artists such as John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, and Hank Williams, he has curated a sound all of his own. The rich nature of ‘Judgement Day’ instantly touches the listener and fills the entire music spectrum wonderfully.
