Exzenya – “The Fans Applauded” | Interview
Exzenya returns with The Fans Applauded, a cinematic and emotionally rich release that explores the fragile space between fear and courage. Blending pop, soft rock, and singer-songwriter elements, the track captures a deeply human moment — standing in front of an audience while battling self-doubt.
What makes this release particularly compelling is its honesty, drawing from real experiences of stage fright and internal pressure. With storytelling at its core and a clear sense of artistic growth, Exzenya offers a track that feels both personal and widely relatable, inviting listeners into a moment many will instantly recognise.
“The Fans Applauded” captures a really vulnerable moment on stage — was this inspired by a specific experience in your own life?
Yes — it comes from real stage fright. Not just nerves, but the kind where your body shuts down. I’ve had moments in public speaking where I froze and couldn’t get the words out, even though I was the one leading. I’ve never performed singing live because of that level of fear. So the song comes from that place — and from imagining what that moment would feel like if I actually stepped onto a stage to sing.
The song moves from fear to courage — how did you approach translating that emotional shift into the music and vocal performance?
I followed the moment as it would actually happen. It starts in that internal space — quiet, heavy, stuck in your head. Then the shift doesn’t come from me forcing confidence… it comes from the audience. When they start reacting, singing, supporting — that’s what changes it. So the vocal opens up as that moment unfolds.
There’s a strong theme of audience connection — how has your relationship with your listeners shaped your confidence as an artist?
My listeners have been a huge part of building my confidence. From my very first release, the constant positive feedback — the comments, the messages, the shares, the streams — all of it has been incredibly motivating. Seeing people connect with the music and seeing that engagement grow means a lot. That support has helped me keep going and continue building confidence.

The track feels very cinematic and storytelling-driven — do you tend to write from personal moments first, or build stories around emotions?
It starts with both emotion and visualization. I think in pictures — like scenes in a movie — so when I’m writing, I’m seeing it play out as much as I’m feeling it. Some of it comes from personal moments, like public speaking or training. But performing as a vocalist is something I haven’t done yet — it’s something I’m working toward. So the song blends real emotion with imagined moments.
You blend pop, soft rock, and singer-songwriter elements — how did you decide on the sound palette for this particular song?
I built the sound around the feeling. It starts in a dark, hollow space — fear, panic, uncertainty — and stays stripped so that emotion comes through clearly. As the song progresses, the sound builds to match that shift when the audience comes in. It follows that emotional progression from start to finish.

Your vocals carry a lot of emotional weight here — did you approach recording differently to capture that rawness?
I stayed connected to the feeling the entire time. I focused on letting the emotion come through naturally so it feels real — like you’re inside that moment as it’s happening. The vocal starts more contained and then opens up as the shift happens. It was about honesty and letting the emotion lead.
The idea of fear before performing is something many artists experience — what advice would you give to someone facing that same moment?
Recognise what you’re feeling for what it is. That moment matters — that’s why it feels intense. There will always be thoughts in your head — for me, it’s that voice saying “they’re all going to laugh at you.” But it’s just a thought, not reality. Focus on the moment and move through it. And remember — the audience is there for a reason. They’re there because they support you.
You’ve previously explored more satirical and narrative-driven work like “Drunk Texting” — how does this release represent your evolution as an artist?
This represents me — my mindset, my observations, and different emotional perspectives. Each song shows a different side. It also reflects my growth. With every song, I learn more — about the industry, composition, sound, and how to build something complete. As I grow, the way I construct each piece becomes more refined.

The turning point in the song comes from the audience’s reaction — have you experienced a real moment where fans changed how you felt mid-performance?
I haven’t experienced that in a live singing performance yet. This song reflects what I see happening when I do perform — that moment where the audience responds and everything shifts. I’ve experienced versions of that in public speaking, where the energy in the room changes. This is the moment I picture.
What do you hope listeners take away from “The Fans Applauded” after hearing it for the first time?
I want them to recognise that feeling — being in your head, overwhelmed, unsure if you can do what you’re there to do. And then that shift — realising you’re not alone. If they can see themselves in that moment, that’s what matters to me.
