Interview – Natasha Jane Julian

We were lucky enough to catch up with musician Natasha Jane Julian for an interview. Check it out below!

Hi Natasha Jane Julian, tell us about yourself?

Hi. I come from a small mountain town in California called Idyllwild. I loved the stage from an early age always trying out for talent shows and theatre! I started dancing, which led to acting and singing. Although actually a bit shy to perform in front of people, my drive overtook my fears. The music business however, was so far from my reality as a youngster that I’ve had to really find my way through that, which has been the hardest part in making my dream a reality. The writing and artistry came at a much later time in my life. I feel for me, I had to live and really experience things to become the artist I was meant to be. Then it all came pouring out!

What is your songwriting process?

Up until recently, I mostly wrote my myself. It was when it was completely silent, that I had the head space to really try and pull out what I was trying to say lyrically and be creative with the music. But I am writing 24/7 in reality. I have melodies running through my head all the time and I out a quick voice memo in and come back later to build on it. Now,  I’ve started to write with others though, and it’s so cool to hear where other people want to go with the song. It’s usually very different than what your thinking or where you were taking it.

Brilliant. What’s the best gig you ever played?

Probably at Marine Hall in Fleetwood, UK while I was living out in Europe!

Tell us about your latest single?

My latest release ‘ANGEL’ I collaborated with Dom Morley from the UK. He’s awesome!  I wanted to start off with one song to see how we worked together, so I sent him a few ideas of mine. We started with Mechanical Heart. We built up a sound palate of stuff beforehand that I liked, and thought fit me and my music. From there, he sent me a rough mix and I fell in love with it and that was just the bare track without the guitar or ebow that’s in there now! I loved how warm and full the sound was and I loved how I was apart of building the sound. I fly out to record with him,  and it was also an easy well communicated process. That process flowed into more songs and that’s why I decided to release an EP. The songs all belonged together,  to an era in time when that was coming out of me.

What is your funniest gig moment?

Well, I’ve fallen off the stage before but that was in my early days! I love to use that stage space!

What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?

Truth. I have some really deep songs and messages but that’s the truth. I write from the heart.

Who are your musical influences?

Sia, Lana Del Ray, Madonna, Linda Ronstadt, and Carol King. They have inspired me for different reasons at different times in my life.

Who are your non-musical influences?

Meryl Streep, Kate Bosworth, & Audrey Hepburn

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

Changing with the times but not compromising your artistry.

What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting out?

You can learn from people, but you know best as to what makes you special! Find that, don’t listen to who they think you are.  And Finding that might take more time for others.

Finally, what are your hopes for next 2 years?

I hope to have a world wide radio hit! And then do a full tour!

Natasha, we wish you all he best for the future and we are sure the hit and tour are just around the corner!
