An Unpredictable Approach to Songwriting
Canadian songwriter Mogipbob returns with “Anything but Me”, a 16-track album that takes an unpredictable approach to storytelling. Blending country-soul, folk-rock, blues, funk and retro-soul, the collection moves between offbeat characters, unexpected scenarios and more thoughtful observations on everyday life.
From the playful absurdity of songs such as “Hell’s Bell Bottoms” and “Umpire Vampire” to reflections on memory, identity and change, there is no single formula at work here. Instead, Mogipbob lets each idea find its own musical direction, bringing together humour and sincerity in a collection that celebrates the unexpected places a song can go.
Characterful Instrumentation and Memorable Melodies
“Set-Back Out Back” opens the release with a bright and punchy sound. We adore the characterful instrumentation that instantly draws the listener in and holds our attention effortlessly. The sharp storytelling is evident from the get-go.
“As Is Where Is” is fuelled by gorgeous instrumental melodies before the impressive storytelling kicks in. The intelligent chord progressions fill the sonic spectrum with vivid colour, while the charismatic performance brings light to the piece.

“First Degree Second Decree” takes the album in a fresh direction, with a melancholic vibe and a big, memorable chorus. Moreover, “Sunday Drive” is fuelled by addictive melodies and driving instrumentation. The reflective lyrics are set against thoughtful chord progressions, and the engaging storytelling is simply magical.
Finally, the title track, “Anything but Me”, closes the release with a bluesy vibe and the same exquisite execution. Gorgeous grooves lay the foundation for the enchanting vocals to shine through.
Humour, Reflection and Creative Freedom
At its heart, “Anything but Me” is an album built around the possibilities of a good songwriting idea. Mogipbob’s willingness to move between the ridiculous and the reflective gives the collection its distinctive character, while its varied musical influences allow each story to find its own voice.
The result is a release that resists easy categorisation, favouring imagination, everyday observations and a healthy sense of humour over sticking to a predictable formula. We were also lucky enough to catch up with Mogipbob for an in-depth interview; enjoy here!
For listeners who appreciate character-driven lyrics, unexpected storytelling and songs that can make you smile as readily as they make you think, “Anything but Me” offers plenty to explore.
