Hi Alessia, tell us about yourself?

I am a singer songwriter from Italy, but based in London. Or at least I was before Covid. I am currently finishing my degree in Popular Music Performance at Bimm London, and at the same time I am working on new music. I have big plans for 2021, and I can’t wait to be on a stage again!

What is your songwriting process?

I usually get inspired by little things in life, small gestures, feelings that we all feel. So I speak my mind, through the lyrics I try to relate with people in the simplest way, so to create a direct and instant connection with the listeners.

My songwriting process starts in different ways, sometimes from a melody stuck in my head, sometimes from something I want to say or feel. I write down sentences, interesting words or little stories. After that I try to find the perfect melody to match the lyrics and the emotions behind that. When melody and lyrics are roughly done, I start working on the sounds with my producer.

Tell us about your latest release, ‘Like U’?

I wrote ‘Like U’ almost a year ago, during the first lockdown. I was stuck in my room, far away from all my family and friends like everybody else. Things were changing very fast and it was scary! Somehow I felt very grateful for all the good people around me.

What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?

I think that my music conveys empowering and positive vibes. Especially ‘Like U’, my latest release, it’s a joyful song to honor the good people around me and to remember myself that I am lucky to have them. So I really hope this positive feeling spreads to the listeners too.

What draws you to the indie-pop genre?

Still not sure about that to be honest. I find it hard to define a single genre, as I get inspired by many of them.

Who are your musical influences?

I am influenced by the current London music scene and artists such as Lily Moore, Olivia Dean and Anne-Marie but also worldwide known artists like Amy Winehouse. I love many genres but I usually listen to Pop, Soul, Neo-Soul, and R&B.

Who are your non-musical influences?

Ashley Graham for her work on standardising curvy shapes. I think she really is an icon of body positivity and her work helped a lot of women. I find it very inspiring how she fights for size inclusivity in fashion, she’s also been very vocal about designers who fail to cater to a wide range of clothing sizes. Another amazing activist is Jameela Jamil. With her platforms she helped people from all over the world, also she already changed global policies at Instagram and Facebook.

Pre-covid, what was the music scene like in London?

London was so vibrant before Covid. One of the best music industries in the world. The London music scene was incomparable and all the music opportunities were there. Things have changed so quickly, I am not sure if it will fully recover after Covid.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

I think that Covid is the biggest obstacle for everyone at the moment. Not being able to rehearse and gig with the band I think is the worst of a nightmare for an artist or band.

What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting out?

My advice to bands and artists starting out is to be present and constant on social media. A lot of people don’t believe in the power of Instagram, TikTok or Facebook, but I think it is crucial nowadays. Create a fanbase and let your audience follow you step by step in your music journey.
