We caught up with HYBRID KID following the release of the brilliant single ‘1 2 3’. Read the interview now!
Who or what got you into music?
I have an elder sister and brother, and they had some great records which got me started. There were already guitars in the house as they’d both tried to play, so it was only a matter of time before I gave it a go too.
Who influenced your latest release ‘1 2 3’?
Fontaines DC.
Hybrid Kid has been together for a number of years, how has your sound evolved over time?
That’s a hard one; I guess it’s for other people to judge. The more you do this, the more influences you pick up from albums you’ve heard, musicians and other bands you’ve played with and it all goes in the soup. I think there’s a lot to learn about things like guitar tone and equipment which I’ve got better at.
We see you played in the US for a period of time, what was that like?
I loved it out there; San Francisco has a lot of great dive bars and smaller venues. We even played a venue which was a laundrette, grab a beer and watch a band while doing your washing.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Stephen Malkmus.
What’s your dream venue to play?
The Fillmore, San Francisco. Everyone gets a free apple and a poster.
What’s the music scene like in Brighton?
Music scene is pretty good here, lots of venues (although we lost a few recently) and we have the Great Escape festival which uses all the venues in Brighton, highly recommended.
Other than music, what are you passionate about?
I got back into painting again recently, and I like going to Art Galleries.
What changes would you like to see in the music business?
I’d like to see some really cool record labels want to give us a deal.
How do you feel about how the internet plays a role in the music business today?
It makes it really easy for anyone to put music out there now, which in some ways is good. It also means there’s a hell of a lot of music to wade through so how do you get to your song to stand out above all the others. We’ve been making our own taster videos and putting them out on social media which seems to be working for us right now.
Have you started working on your next release?
We were supposed to be in the studio in February, but that’s on hold. We still have a couple of singles we did last year which we’re releasing in the next couple of months.
