We were lucky enough to catch up with musician RENEE STAHL following the superb release of ‘EVERY TEAR IS A PRAYER’.
Hi Renee, what is your earliest music memory?
One of my earliest music memories was singing into the mirror holding a hairbrush as if it was a microphone singing “That’s the way I like it” by KC and the Sunshine Band. It was also around this time(7 years old) when I auditioned for a local performing chorus called “The Singing Angels”.
Who or what got you into music?
My oldest brother was an incredible piano player; I was inspired by him, along with my parents loving music/ jazz. When I was 10, I went to a theatre camp and auditioned for plays. I loved musical theatre and would belt show tunes in my room.
Who influenced your latest release ‘Every Tear Is A Prayer’?
I brought my dad home to live with us in the final three months of his life. It was intense and heartbreaking. This song is about finding myself in the most vulnerable place. The anticipation of knowing he was going. I could feel him holding on but knew we both had to let go.
What draws you to the indie-pop genre?
I have been drawn to many types of music. I think it’s the melodies that I am inspired by.
What’s the music scene like in Santa Barbara?
There are a lot of wonderful musicians/songwriters in Santa Barbara. It’s such a wonderful community. I love to lead song circles which is a call and response gathering inviting anyone who loves to sing and express using their voice.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
One of my dreams is to sing with an orchestra so does it count to say the LA Philharmonic? I would also love to collaborate with RY X and Guy Garvey from Elbow.
Other than music, what are you passionate about?
I am passionate about my children- they inspire me daily, I love to cook, bake and sew (I am making my first quilt) and I am crazy about my dog.
If you could choose one thing for fans to take away from your music, what would it be?
My hope is that when someone hears my music, they are moved whether it’s to tears or to inspire them to create something of their own.
What is your favourite song to play live?
I think one of my favourite songs to play live is “You Didn’t Know”.
Have you started working on your next release?
I have been writing some new songs, but nothing is ready to be recorded yet.
