We caught up with Bristol-based band Rozelle, following the release of the superb single ‘Tell Me’, for a full interview.

Tell us about yourself?

We’re four best mates living together in Bristol. We like to make alternative pop/rock music, and we like to write songs about the beauty and tragedy in the world.

What is your songwriting process?

It varies, often Hayley (Front Woman) will bring an acoustic track to the table, and then we’ll work together on the arrangement in the practice rooms. Other times – Hayley (Front Woman) will write a melody and lyrics in the practice room to a chord progression from Alex (Guitarist), and we’ll all get involved!

Tell us about your latest release?

We wanted to bring something lighter, feel good to the table, and ‘Tell Me’ we feel is that. The track is inspired from two best friends talking about their future, one is having doubts, and is sceptical. The other is optimistic and wanting their friend to see the light.

What message do you think your music conveys to your fans?

We hope it makes people feel united, happy and free. We want our fans to feel like their part of the band – on the journey with us.

Who are your musical influences?

Our musical influences vary massive, We’re all into different eras and love most genres – Radiohead, David Bowie, Prince, Queen, Little Dragon, Rush, Broken Social Scene, The Pixies, Tool, Aretha Franklin, Captain Beefheart, Justice, Lady Gaga.

What’s the best gig that you have ever played?

Tough question! Probably when we headlined Bristol Harbourside in 2016. The crowd was buzzing as it was in the height of summer. Also, Cardiff pride a couple of years back on the main stage was pretty amazing too. There’s too many.

What is your funniest gig moment?

Probably when Hayley fed a load of lairy lads at the front of the stage Jagermeister midway through the set. Or maybe when we threw a gig in our garage, and our neighbours were getting down and dirty to one of our songs.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles for bands/artists today?

You’re asked to become a brand today, aside from creating music, and being musicians. You’re expected most of the time understanding ‘how to get your music heard’ – that in itself can be overwhelming and challenging for many artists. Especially when you’re working 24/7 to earn money to fund your music in the early stages. Aside from that, with live shows not happening at the moment. Regular and steady income for artists is not there. Earning enough money from Spotify plays to fund all actives over 12-24 months is fine if you’re Drake or Beyonce.

What advice would you give to other bands/artists starting out?

Don’t be put off by anything, having a passion in the first place is an amazing thing – Enjoy the journey, all the fails and all the successes as it’s all character building, and will lead to some epic stories down the line.

What are your hopes for the next two years?

Over the next two years, we’re going to release lots of content, and hopefully will gain some new friends and fans along the way. We’ll also be playing a gig near you someday.
