We were lucky enough to catch up with the Canadian-based artist TAMPA following the stunning EP release ‘Baby’. Read the full interview now!

How did you first get into music?

It all goes back to growing up listening to Journey, Foreigner, the Styx with my mom. Eventually, I had the itch to play, and I got lessons by the time I was seven.

What is the first song that captured your attention as a youngster?

Without a doubt, it would be ‘Juke-Box Hero’ by Foreigner. I think the descriptive lyrics of going from picking up a guitar and making something out of it intrigued me.

Who influenced your latest release ‘Baby’?

I tried to not take too much influence in efforts to create a fresh sound, but it would be crazy to say many artists didn’t have a role in the tone of songwriting for the album. DIIV, early Beach Fossils, Tokyo Police Club, and Best Coast would be among some.

You have been working on your debut release for eight years, why was now the right time to make a release?

It really just came down to capability. Since I started playing and writing music with intent when I was 16, I wanted to record. Whether it was a computer crash, lack of time or friendships in turmoil there always seemed to be something stopping the release. Beyond happy, we were able to get past that this time around.

What’s the music scene like in Gatineau?

At the moment, I couldn’t tell you! We will have to wait until lockdown ends and see!

What motivates you to make music?

Ultimately it’s some sort of meditation for me. A chance to reflect on my thoughts through a medium I’m comfortable in working.

‘Baby’ is dream-pop, what draws you to the genre?

I did my best to not think of genre too much while writing the songs; I suppose the influences made it come out that way. I think there’s a tendency to use a lot of jazz chords and tricky timing in indie music nowadays and we wanted to stray away from that for this record. We wanted to make a record more similar to the indie bands of the 2000’s/2010’s.

If you could open for any artist/band who would it be?

Shawn Mendes all the way.

What are your other passions aside from music?

Sewing, reading, walking my dog. All those old people things y’know?

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I doubt I know enough about it to have an educated opinion on the matter, but artists keeping the rights to their material would be a nice place to start I’m sure.

What is the best music advice you have ever been given?

Less is more. I’m still working on this.

What musical plans do you have for the next two years?

Have another EP out sometime this summer. A full LP released by the end of 2021. As many as shows as possible. A tour when lockdown ends and I snag some bandmates!
