Satsuma’s debut EP, Anodyne, is a striking example of complete artistic independence, blending 90s alternative rock influences with deeply personal songwriting. The solo project of Edinburgh-based multi-instrumentalist Cam Halkerston, every element—from instrumentation to production and artwork—has been created entirely by one person.
Ash and Dust opens the release with gorgeous guitar work and an intelligent arrangement. We adore the title track, Anodyne, which is fuelled by textured instrumentation and charismatic performances. Moreover, the lyrics are thought-provoking and stay with the listener long after the music has ended.
In addition, Swallowed evolves before the listener with dynamic performances and textured instrumentation. Finally, Scorched Earth closes the release with addictive grooves and magnetic melodies. One thing is for sure: Anodyne is an affecting release that will stand the test of time. Make sure you add Anodyne to your new release playlist this week. We can not wait to hear what Satsuma will do next.
Inspirations
Inspired by records such as Alice In Chains’ Jar of Flies, Yo La Tengo’s Painful, and Radiohead’s The Bends, Anodyne balances raw guitar energy with space, atmosphere, and vulnerable vocals. Written during a period of personal upheaval and reflection, the EP offers an unfiltered insight into identity, struggle, and self-reconstruction through music that feels both intimate and expansive.

Emotion
What makes Anodyne stand out is not just its sound, but the intent behind it. Recorded largely at home under real-world limitations, Halkerston’s commitment to live instrumentation and unpolished vocals preserves the emotional core of each track. The result is a body of work that values honesty over perfection, capturing moments as they were felt rather than refined away.

Evolve
As Satsuma continues to evolve, this debut lays a powerful foundation—one rooted in resilience, self-expression, and creative control. With plans for future releases and live performances, Anodyne marks the beginning of a project driven by authenticity and a clear artistic vision.
