Types of Instruments In Music

firstly, there are many and varied types of musical instruments, but they can all be divided into 4 separate categories. Moreover, within those categories, the musical instruments vary in different pitches and tonal qualities.

In an orchestra, the musicians sit in these specific groupings. They sit in a semi-circle around the conductor. In general, the string sections are fount in front of the conductor; the woodwinds are in horizontal lines behind the strings. Next, the brass reside, and finally, the percussion can be found at the back of the semi-circle. 

What Are The 4 Types Of Instruments

There are 4 main kinds of musical instruments in an orchestra. They work together to create a unique and unparalleled sonic experience.

The Piano

The piano is a divisive topic as to where it belongs in the groupings. It produces sound by hitting 88 black and white keys with your fingers which would classify it to be in the percussion family. However, inside the keys lift hammers which in turn hit strings.

Does this make it a stringed instrument?

It’s not for us to say and you’ll have to make up your own mind on that one. We can only tell you facts!

In addition, the piano has the most extensive range of the instruments in an orchestra. It can be used as a solo instrument, or to support the harmony of other musical instruments taking the lead. 

Is learning to play the piano more your thing?

String Instruments

String instruments are hollow inside, and this allows the sound to vibrate within the body of the instrument. Strings are made of nylon, steel or sometimes gut. Moreover, the strings are played by either being plucked or drawing a bow across them. 

String instruments include:

Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, and harp

Brass Instruments

Brass instruments are played by blowing air into the mouthpiece of the instrument. Vibrations from the musicians’ lips, cause air to vibrate into the instrument creating the sound. 

Brass instruments include:

Cornet, Euphonium, Flugelhorn, French horn (Horn in F), Hunting horn, Piccolo Trumpet, Trombone, Trumpet, and Tuba. 

Percussion Instruments

Percussion instruments are generally hit or scraped to be produce sound. Musicians can use a beater to hit them too.

Percussion instruments include:

Timpani, Chimes, Celesta, Cymbals, Triangle, Snare Drum, Bass, Drum, Tambourine, Maracas, Gongs, and, Xylophone.

Woodwind Instruments

Wind instruments produce a unique sound. In short, a player blows air between a reed and sound occurs when air vibrates inside the instrument.

Woodwind instruments include:

Flute, piccolo, clarinet, recorder, bassoon, and oboe.
