Bert Brett – ‘Anything’
South London Musician Bert Brett, has released his incredible latest single, ‘Anything’ and it is an enthralling and gritty listen.
An aggressively picked electric guitar opens the single and sets the scene as to what is to come. It plays an addictive riff which repeats throughout the song. The beat drops with the bass and there is an Arctic Monkeys vibe to the single.
We adored the vocals on ‘Anything’, Brett’s accent cuts through the mix and gives a realness to the piece. His voice shines at the forefront of the mix too. The backing vocals are layered and fully rounded, adding new textures and dimensions to the song.
Claps appear as percussion and with the punchy drums, they both draw the listener in further. There is a staccato feel from the second verse onwards, which is thoroughly addictive; the rhythm delivers the intelligent lyrics perfectly. ‘Anything’ ends as it began with the solo electric guitar riff, bringing the song full circle.
Influences
Brett cites his influences as ranging from Jamie T and Alex Turner to classics like The Kinks and The Clash. His songs document the bittersweet strife of modern life – from love and loss on London streets to the everyday struggle of making ends meet. We found ‘Anything’ to be filled with honest and relatable lyrics.
In 2019, Brett played solo sets on the London music scene. He appeared at the historic Troubadour and Bush Hall. He is back in 2020 with a four-piece band and is planning to release a new track every six weeks this year.
So make a note of the name Bert Brett, he is destined for big things in 2020, and we can not wait to see what he will do next.
