London based musician Diego Philips has released his superb latest album, ‘Tides’. It is an indie-folk release, filled with luscious melodies and ear-catching grooves.

The opening song ‘Smile’ has an upbeat vibe with joyous melodies. We loved the layered vocals which create texture within the piece. We adored the track ‘Pretend’, it has a delicate vocal performance. The heartfelt and genuine lyrics shine through and capture the listener’s attention. Also, we very much enjoyed ‘The Sun’, the moody vibe is affecting and challenging. ‘When I Feel the Moon’, is quite simply an excellent tune too. It is filled with colour and leaves the listener wanting more. Diego Philips is an excellent songwriter whose arrangements on this album are stunning.

Philips says, “‘Tides’ is the product of a creative collaboration between friends that was fittingly recorded in a shack close to the sea in Newhaven, East Sussex. The album is 100% self-funded, with no label, no record deal, and no manager.” He continues, “This album is a blend of different genres. Influences are Father John Misty, Devendra Banhart, Ben Howard but also The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Black Keys.”

Philips and his band, the Pretty Boys, were formed while at BIMM in London in 2015. They expanded from a group of three to a six-piece act, and each members’ distinct cultural background adds richness to the band’s sound. Together they have played at venues like the Half Moon, the Troubadour, the Finborough Arms, and the Underbelly.

Joining the band on the album are Jakub Rokosz on percussion and Paul Drilhon on piano, with Magda Skyllbäck, Miranda Öhman, Emma Hughes & Linnéa Ljungblad offering backing vocals. The album’s producer, James Yates, both engineered and mixed it too, and lent his own technical skill with the vibraphone, baritone guitar, and percussion. ‘Tides’ was mastered by Guy Davie at Electric Mastering in London, he has worked with artists such as Michael Kiwanuka.

So make sure you check out this exciting album this week. ‘Tides’ is a superb release which is destined to stand the test of time.
