Newcastle Neo-Soul vocalist Zi has released her debut single ’24’, in March 2020. It is a thrilling release filled with an addictive beat, soulful melodies, and scrumptious vocals.
An organic rain sound opens the release. This is swiftly followed by layered synths creating interest and intrigue. All of this lays a solid foundation for Zi’s soulful vocals to spring from. Emotive and driving melodies fill the sonic spectrum creating texture too.
We adored Zi’s vocal performance. Her vocals are the shining star of the piece and are filled with a relatable emotion that resonates deep within the listener. Her range is incredible, and the tone she possesses fits perfectly within the song. ’24’ is a memorable single which is destined to have you reaching for the repeat button.
Zi says, “’24’ is a special song to me because it’s my first release but also because it’s a song of raw emotion. The lyrics reflect an unhealthy relationship and the different problems it faced.” She continues, “’24’ is the result of cathartic writing, with the track rising and falling, mirroring the turbulence of an on again off-again relationship.”
Citing her influences as artists such as Rhianna, Summer Walker, Jorja Smith, and Ella Mai, Zi is innovating soulful RNB with her creative sound. Her deeply heartfelt lyrics are destined to resonate with Zi’s current fans and win her an army of new ones too.
The single has been excellently produced by Tim Botor and mixed at the legendary 301, creating a polished and professional sound for the debut release. The moody production draws elements from R&B, trap, and electronica – with a key-driven melody, swelling, layered vocals, and triplets.
So make sure you add ’24’ to your weekend playlist. With such a strong debut single, we can not wait to see what Zi will do next!
